Farmville guide with tips and tricks

farmvilleFacebook recently broke the news that one it’s applications, Farmville is more popular than rival social networking website, Twitter. Apparently Farmville has 69 million active users. So what is Farmville all about? We take a look and reveal some tips and tricks you’ll need to know to become a fantastic farmer.

The basic idea of the game is to gain coins and XP (experience points) by planting different crops, collecting fruits from trees and produce from animals. Each action can give you a different reward in coins and XP. For example, planting soybeans will cost you 15 coins and you’ll gain 2 XP. You wait 24 hours and then each plot of soybeans will reward you with 63 coins.

You progress through the levels by building up your XP and each level has a higher target of XP for you to reach.

Got it? Dont worry if your unsure on how to play, when you load Farmville for the first time you’ll get some simple instructions on how to proceed and it’s quite self-explanatory.

10 things you NEED to know about Farmville!

1. Follow the ribbons to achieve bonus XP – In the bottom right hand corner of the playing screen you’ll see a ribbon, click on that to reveal your targets. Each time you receive a ribbon you’ll be rewarded with an amount of coins, XP and some ribbons even give you a gift. Be wise when trying to get each ribbon, for example if you need to own 11 more buildings to achieve your last ribbon in ‘Architect’ - it might be worth buying 11 rest tents and then selling them straight away after. Rest tents are only 1,000 coins (the cheapest building) – you’ll gain 10 XP for building each one and 50 coins back after selling them. The bonus in XP and coins you’ll get from the ribbon will be worth it.farmville trapped farmer

2. Save yourself time and trap your player – As of writing this guide, if you box in your little farmer, you can still continue to perform every single activity but a lot quicker. It saves time on the farmer walking to each plot of land as when the farmer is trapped there is no waiting time between each action. If you have a large number of fields to plow or a large number of animals to collect from, you’ll notice a huge difference in the amount of time it takes. Try purchasing 4 hay bales and place one to each side of the farmer on the loading screen. You can even make a fancy pattern with the decorations that trap the player – see picture.

3. Use space efficiently – This is a fairly simple rule, you need to make the maximum use out of the space you are given so that you can put more fields, animals or trees down. Plant fields adjacent to one another with no gaps and depending on how pretty you want your farm to look, you could not allow your animals to walk and place them right next to each other. That way, you’ll have more earning potential in coins and XP.

4. Consider harvesting time – When you plant your crops, consider when you will next be available to go on Farmville and harvest your crops. Raspberries take just 2 hours to be ready for harvesting, so if your not going to be going back online for another day after planting, your crops will have wilted by the time you are back online. Keep in mind that crops will be ready for the same amount of time it takes for them to grow, after that they will wither away randomly until a further 50% of growth time has passed. For example, if you plant blackberries that take 4 hours to grow, you’ll have 4 hours after they grow to harvest them. After those 4 hours, for the next 2 hours the blackberries will wither away randomly until they have all withered.

5. Plant cash crops – It’s important to plant the crops that represent the best value for money. Soybeans take 24 hours to grow, they cost 15 coins to buy and sell for 63 coins. Compare Soybeans to sunflowers, they take the same amount of time to grow, cost 135 coins and sell for 315 coins. Soybeans therefore offer a profit of 48 coins and sunflowers offer a profit of 180 coins. Obviously what you grow depends on when you will next be available to harvest your crops, so plan carefully what crops you plant. The crops that offer a higher return become unlocked as you progress through the levels. At present, the best value crop is peas. They offer a profit of 189 coins, 3 XP every time you plant them and are ready to harvest within 24 hours. You need to be level 32 to plant peas though.

6. Get more neighbours – Neighbours are one of the key elements to progressing quickly in Farmville. They can fertilise your crops and each plot that they fertilise, you’ll get an extra XP when you harvest. Each neighbour can only fertlise 5 crops (that are growing) a day, so if you have 5 neighbours – thats potentially an extra 25 XP points you can gain when you harvest your crops. If you have 100 neighbours – that’s potentially an extra 500 XP points. See the difference? With a full list of neighbours, you can also visit their farm and get a small bonus in coins and XP for helping out – you might be asked to shoo off racoons or clear weeds. And for every plot you harvest of theirs, you gain an extra XP point. It doesn’t stop there – there is also a ribbon you can achieve if you get 50 neighbours which will offer an XP and coin bonus. Neighbours can also send you free gifts everyday and some items you cannont buy in the market, you must send as a gift – for example an Olive Tree. But what happens if you only have 5 friends on your friend list that play Farmville? Here is where Farmville has come under some criticism, because it could encourage people to add complete strangers in order to progress in the game. Those complete strangers could then have access to your personal information. A solution? Set up a friend list on Facebook and restrict their access in your privacy settings so they can see nothing that is of any importance – then add your ‘Farmville Friends’ so you can build your network of neighbours.

7. Send gifts regular – This links back to point number 6, at present you can send a gift to 30 different friends at a time and it’s well worth doing on a daily basis because that will encourage your neighbours to send you gifts back thus meaning you’ll get free things for your farm - some of which are seasonal specials and items you cannot buy in the market.

8. Know your trees and animals -  Each tree will harvest in a different amount of time and will give a different amount of coins when you harvest it. Date trees take 3 days to be ready for collecting from and offer 69 coins in return, thats a 23 coin per day return. Compare this to cherry trees that take 2 days to be ready and offer 18 coins, that’s only 9 coins per day. Looking at animals, goats are ready to collect milk from in 2 days and offer 54 coins, that’s a 27 coin per day return. A pig gives 30 coins and is ready for collecting truffles from in 2 days, that’s a 15 coin per day return. However, see point number 9 as it might save you time collecting from lots of different animals.

9. Use dairy farms and chicken coops – Each dairy farm and chicken coop holds 20 cows or chickens respectively and they are available to harvest in a day. You can have a maximum of 5 dairy farms and 1 chicken coop. If you do have all 6 buildings, that 120 animals you can harvest each day- provided they are all full. Thats 6 items to harvest as opposed to 120 saving you a lot of time and builds the number of animals you have collected from which is important for the ‘Zoologist’ ribbon (you need to collect from 5,000). Collecting from your chicken coop also gives you a chance at gaining a mystery egg that you can share with your Farmville friends. Every now and then you will get a mystery egg from your chicken coop when you collect, this gives your friends a chance to hatch the egg and gain a prize. Different colour eggs offer different prizes – golden mystery eggs from golden chickens offer the most valuable prizes such as a hot tub, a tree swing or even a golden chicken.

10. Set up a Farmville feed – On your Facebook homepage you’ll see a selection of different feeds on the left hand side of your page. Drag the Farmville feed towards the top so that it remains there permanent. You’ll notice that when you progress through the levels, achieve ribbons, find a lost animal or find a mystery egg you’ll get the chance to share with your friends by posting it on your Facebook wall. The feed will only show posts from Farmville – that way you can monitor all of your friends Farmville posts at the same time. Each post offers a different reward, and you’ll see on the post a link that will take you to Farmville and tell you what the reward is. Some will be more popular than others and expire in a few minutes so when you load the Farmville feed, right click on the ’receive item/bonus’ link and open in a new tab, that way you can click as many as possible without having to return to the same tab.
