The 10 best foods you can possibly eat

It’s important to remember that when reading this guide, dietary requirements differ from person-to-person. However, in general I believe these are 10 foods which you absolutely need to be including in your weekly, if not daily, diet.

Don’t worry – they aren’t £67.99 per portion and only available in the Galapagos Islands. They are everyday foods that you probably don’t even realise how super they are. There are other foods which are fantastic and may even be better than the ones I’ve listed – but I’ve tried to compile a realistic list of foods that people can include in their weekly shopping without hassle.

1. Broccoli
A member of the cabbage family, broccoli is a highly nutritional food. Typically, 150 grams of broccoli provides you with about 200% of your daily amount of Vitamin C and K while also giving you plenty of Vitamin A, fibre, potassium, magnesium and even those highly sought after omega-3 fats. Broccoli also contains cancer fighting nutrients: sulforaphane and indoles. These nutrients deactivate the cells that promote cancer growth. Research into broccoli has suggested it cuts your chance of getting lots of different types of cancer including prostate, ovarian and bladder. One project looked at eating broccoli and tomatoes on a daily basis and the results showed that prostate cancer shrunk by 52% compared to the subjects without tomatoes or broccoli. Broccoli also helps support stomach health, repair skin damaged by the sun, reduces the risk of heart disease, prevents cataracts and boosts your immune system. Broccoli is also good for your bones, combining its calcium and Vitamin C content to keep bones strong. You need to be eating broccoli on a regular basis – no question.

2. Salmon
Salmon is an oily fish and is a fantastic source of omega-3 fatty acids which help fight against loads of diseases. The average person doesn’t get enough omega-3, click here to read more about omega-3. Salmon is also a great source of protein.

3. Bananas
This yellow fruit is great before, during and after exercise as it provides a natural source of energy – slightly more than most other fruits. However, bananas are great at any time being a great source of potassium and vitamin B6 which helps to lower brood pressure and build healthier skin and hair respectively.

4. Garlic
Research has shown that garlic helps fight against cancer and has a natural ability to prevent the growth of cancer in the breast, colon, skin, prostate, stomach and oesophagus. Garlic enhances our immune system all round, some people eat a garlic glove a day to help prevent against colds and other illnesses. Not a bad idea at all – try to include garlic in your diet, just don’t eat lots before you go out on the pull.

5. Eggs
Eggs are treated unfairly – some diets suggest avoiding them, others suggest ditching the yolk. Eggs, yolk and all, are a brilliant natural source of protein, vitamin D, vitamin A and vitamin B2 as well as many others. Most of their goodness is contained in the yolk – which does contain cholesterol, however get rid of other things from your diet to lower your cholesterol if you need to. The goodness in eggs far outweighs the suggested badness.

6. Almonds
Almonds are a great source of protein, fibre and several minerals including calcium, magnesium, iron, potassium and zinc. They have quite a high content of vitamin E and contain smaller amounts of folic acid and vitamin B2. Almonds do have fat in, but its the mono-unsaturated type that help fight against heart disease. Eat them unroasted and unsalted so that they retain the maximum amount of goodness.

7. Tomatoes
Another one of those foods that have been proven to significantly reduce the risk of certain types of cancer – especially prostate, lung and stomach. It’s the lycopene in tomatoes that helps your body prevent and fight cancer and lycopene is best absorbed by your body in cooked tomatoes. Eating tomatoes and broccoli on a daily basis has proved to be one of the best tag teams against cancer. Tomatoes also have a high content of potassium and vitamin C.

8. Sweet Potato
Sweet potatoes can replace standard potatoes in your diet – they do everything the normal potato does, while also providing a great source of vitamins C and E. Sweet potatoes release their energy a lot slower than standard potatoes and count as one of your 5 a day (standard potatoes do not). They help keep your skin and hair in tip top condition and are readily available from the supermarkets. They are also quite sweet (as the names suggests) so you’ll probably enjoy making this change to your diet.

9. Yogurt
Get the natural bio yogurts rather than the ones flavoured with chocolate. Yogurt can help to restore the balance of bacteria in your digestive system and help it function better. Yogurt also helps lower cholesterol, is high in calcium and phosphorous.

10. Wholemeal bread
Wholegrain products in general are great for you – those include oats, brown rice and wholemeal bread. Listed is wholemeal bread, because thats probably the easiest to include in your diet in the day we live in. Click here to read about the benefits of wholemeal bread compared to white bread.
