Sweeten your porridge – the healthy way

Jam or Sugar?
Which do you have when you eat porridge? If you answered neither – well done, but for a lot of us porridge is just too bland on its own so it needs sweetening. Jam is full of sugar and sugar is… well sugar. When your body doesn’t use sugar, it turns it into fat and stores it. Adding jam or sugar into your porridge isn’t that healthy and although it probably only comprises a small percentage of your daily diet, there’s alternatives you should consider and if you change little things one step at a time, before you know it you’ve made a big change.

What are the alternatives?
> Grab a banana, peel it, then mash it to mush with a fork. Add it to hot porridge to enjoy a delicious sweet, banana flavoured porridge (see picture). The texture of the banana blends perfectly with porridge. It’s one of your 5 a day and a great healthy way to start the day.

> Grab an apple or a pear, peel the skin and dice up the inside. Add it to hot porridge and enjoy. This takes slightly longer than mashing up a banana, but tastes great all the same. It also makes up one of your 5 a day.

> Leave your oats overnight in milk or water. Mix your porridge the night before (or early in the morning if you have it at night) and leave the bowl in the fridge. The oats soak up the liquid and a lot of people think it makes the porridge taste better. Strange but true!

What you waiting for? Get your oats out and try these delicious alternatives to sugar and jam to enjoy porridge the healthy way.
