Nutritional stories you would think are April Fools – but they aren’t!

In the spirit of April Fools Day, we have compiled a list of stories relating to nutrition that you would probably think are jokes.. unfortunately they are all true!

Is it a condiment? Is it a fruit?
Ronald Reagan, former President of the United States, wanted to change the classification of tomato ketchup from a condiment to a vegetable! It’s red and it comes from tomatoes, so it must be a vegetable – or so Ronald thought. It was all part of the cutbacks in the provision of school dinners, he wanted to save money by including ketchup in the quota of vegetables schools should supply to children. Of course, it never caught on – that coupled with the fact that tomatoes are (technically speaking) fruits and not vegetables.

A tasty snack that’s free for everyone!
Ever looked at mud or dirt and considered it to be a healthy snack? People who live in third world countries have been found to eat dirt because it is rich in iron, calcium and potassium in some areas. It is known as ‘famine food’ as during times of famine because people cannot afford to buy food from the shop. There was even reports that people in Mongolia had developed a taste for it, one girl was found to be eating her neighbour’s roofing as it was made out of yellow mud – her favourite! Yum!

Woofing all the way to the bank
You’ve heard of pig farms, well in China they have dog farms. Dog meat in China is about twice as valuable as pig meat and recent economic conditions has meant that more and more people are farming dogs. The meat is sold for a higher price than pork and their fur is sold to make coats and blankets. These farms are attacked by animal rights protesters as they argue the dogs are treated cruelly.

Paaaaaarp!
Kate Winslet, back in 1998, reportedly ate nothing but brussel sprouts in order to lose weight for the film, End of Days. Arnold Schwarzenegger wanted her to lose 10lbs to play his wife in the film and Kate duly obliged eating only brussel sprouts! One of the main complaints with the diet is the smell the body excretes…

Seeing the light
Breatharians believe that you do not need food at all to live and that eating is a habit that humans have developed, rather than an essential function. They believe sunlight can sustain life without the need for their bodies to eat at all. Be warned if you’re thinking about trying this one (not that I’d ever consider anyone daft enough) numerous people have died from this diet and one of the most famous breatharians, Wiley Brooks, was pictured eating a chicken pie! Apparently the lure of junk food in society encourages him to break his fast every now and then. Hmmm.

What are your sausages made from?
2 German Air Force officers faced a Court Marshall after attempting to mass produce sausages containing human blood! The 2 officers in question were caught trying to get new recruits to keep up supply as the blood needed to be fresh according to the recipe passed down to them by their grandmother. They had used their own blood for trials and wanted to get the sausages into stores. I wonder if they told the people eating their trial sausages what was actually in them!

It seems that we don’t need a special day dedicated to fools, there’s plenty of them doing daft things all year round!
