Preparing for a big finish
This past week has seen me run probably the furthest I have ever run – it’s not a distance that is to be getting excited about as it’s only about 30 miles in total for the whole week – however keep in mind that I have a dislike for running because I find it quite boring and it’s our first week training for the huge 82 mile run on August 28th. Throw in some light weight training, cross training and some dodgeball and my body hated me on Saturday, my right leg completely gave up on me and after running about 5 miles I had to walk back.
Yesterday me and Jabu went to the Walkers Stadium to take a photo to use for some PR activity. The Walkers Stadium in Leicester will be the finishing point for our 82 mile 3 City Challenge ultra marathon. We’re starting at the Clock Tower in Leicester, heading to the Bullring in Birmingham, then onto the Millenium Square in Coventry and finishing at the Walkers Stadium. We’re setting out at 5pm on Saturday so we’re hoping to get back at around the same time on Sunday, if not before. The sun was immensely bright and getting a good photo where both of us weren’t squinting was difficult, so we’ll make do. Hopefully we’ll be able to get some local press to cover us so that we can raise some funds and awareness for the British Deaf Association. Check out out Just Giving page here.
On Friday, I went for a quick run – there’s a hill about 20 minutes away if you run at a quick pace – I ran to the hill and once I got there, did some hillwork. I think this was the point of overtraining. I ran straight up the hill, then down again in a zig zag dropping at each turning point to do 5 press ups (there’s 5 turning points) and repeated that 5 times. Check out the photograph for the hill. After that I did Spiderman press ups the whole way up the hill and sprinted down. Then I jogged home at a slow pace. It took me just over an hour in total and I estimate that inside the hour I got in about 45 minutes running and did about 200 press ups.
Yesterday, Sunday, I took time to observe a tradition and rested. I did do a quick 300 workout with dumbbells at home – but that doesn’t count right? I’m attempting to keep my upper body muscles working hard so that they don’t waste away. You see quite a lot of runners that are fairly slender and due to my size, it wouldn’t be a good look.
I must say a big congratulations to everyone who completed the London Marathon – that’s 26.2 miles and we’re nowhere near the level of fitness we need to be to run that sort of distance just yet. The ultra marathon that we are going to attempt on August 28th is 82 miles. Our bodies might not be happy with us over the forthcoming months, but the British Deaf Association hopefully will be. Remember to check out our Just Giving page and donate if you can. If you can’t – we know it’s a recession! – we ask that you could join our Facebook group and invite your friends to give us some extra publicity. The British Deaf Association is a charity that needs funds and support as it pushes for the rights of British Sign Language.
