Rules of Gym Etiquette
Are you considering going to the gym for the first time? Perhaps you are a regular gym-goer already and your confused as to why people avoid you. Avoid these mistakes that people make in the gym and you’ll make the whole experience much more enjoyable for everyone else, and more useful for yourself.
1. Pose elsewhere
Mirrors in the gym are for you to monitor your form during working out, not for flexing your muscles adoring yourself – save it for the bathroom at home.
2. Don’t make it obvious
You see a good looking guy or girl working out, it’s natural to look – but remember they are at the gym for the same reason as you should be and that’s to workout. Glance over, but try not to stare. If you do want to chat them up, catch them in the reception area post-workout.
3. Talk is cheap
Chatting to your mates is best left for the pub. Hanging around in groups of more than 2 or 3 means your in the way of other people working out and disturbing the peace. Chatting is fine, but doing so loudly is bad taste – not everyone wants to hear about the argument with the partner.
4. Look good later
Bust your ass down the gym, if your clothes are dripping with sweat and you don’t feel attractive – so what? Gyms are for working out and getting your body in the right shape, you can look good later when the time and place is right. Do remember to wipe down machines however.
5. Ask for advice
Asking for advice in a gym can be as dangerous as it is rewarding, 9 out of 10 people are experts in a gym. So it’s best to ask the personal trainers for a quick bit of advice, or someone who looks like a regular. Definitely do not be afraid to ask for help though, some machines look like they should come with a manual.
6. Be competitive
Some people say that they prefer competitive sports and that’s why they don’t hit the gym, but if you’re next to someone on the treadmill who is running a little faster than you or someone is lifting heavier weights that you are – it’s okay to be a little competitive if that’s your key to motivation. Don’t try to out lift the guy with a 44 inch chest however.
7. “How many sets you got left?”
It’s fine to ask when someone will be finished with the piece of equipment they are using – just wait until they are finished their set, and by wait we mean out of the way – not lingering awkwardly disturbing their routine. It’s just impolite.
8. Put it back
After you’ve finished with it, put equipment back where you found it. Gym staff aren’t always around to tidy the gym up and when the gym is busy, it helps other gym users to find the equipment they are after quicker.
9. Respect personal space
In the gym, getting too close to other people can be dangerous so be careful not to get too close to other people working out. Pulling up a bench next to a guy doing flys isn’t the way forward.
Feel free to leave any advice you may have on gym etiquette.
