How to Become More Active in an Office Job

If you work long hours in a job that doesn’t involve much activity, you may find it difficult to incorporate physical activity in your daily schedule – going to the gym may just be too time consuming for your lifestyle, but remember in order to keep your lifestyle you also need to be alive and healthy. Part of being alive and healthy is staying active. We’ve compiled a list of tips to keep you active if you are struggling to find the time.

  1. Changing your method of transport is a fantastic way to improve your daily activity levels, but it might be impossible. Walking and cycling are great ways to be green and healthy, but when those options aren’t possible – get off the bus a few stops early or park as far away from your staff entrance as you can to include a few extra minutes walking.
  2. Using your lunch break for a walk can not only increase your physical activity levels, but can reduce stress levels and help you concentrate better when you return to work and might improve your productivity.
  3. Using the stairs instead of the elevator is a little clichéd and that’s the minimum you should be doing. Go up the stairs as fast you can (while being safe of course) to give your body an unexpected burst of physical activity to raise your heart rate.
  4. If you need to get in touch with a colleague in the same office, get on your feet on walk on over instead of emailing or telephoning. It will also give your eyes a break from the computer screen.
  5. Brainstorming sessions out in the open offer more than just boosting your daily activity levels, they can often produce better results by giving your mind some fresh scenery. If you have a meeting with just one other person, it might be possible to have a walking meeting.
  6. Larger offices have more than one kitchen or bathroom; head for the one the furthest away from your desk.
  7. Have a stress ball handy, as well as relieving workplace stress it will strengthen and tone the muscles in your hands and forearms.
  8. Exercising in the office is great in theory, but you might just look like a plonker. Try some exercises you can do without people noticing such as lifting your legs up in the air while sitting to work out your core muscles.
  9. Get to know the team by signing up to sports your company might have teams in. Even if you aren’t very good, it’s the activity you are after so don’t worry.
  10. Be the perfect volunteer – whenever someone needs an errand running, offer your services. Be careful not to make yourself the office slave however!
