3 City Challenge 2010 Completed!

On Saturday 28th August at 5pm, Robin Shill and Jabulani Mhlanga set off on an 82 mile ultra marathon to raise money and awareness for the British Deaf Association. The route started at the Clock Tower in Leicester, had checkpoints at the Bullring in Birmingham and the Millenium Square in Coventry and finished back in Leicester at the Walkers Stadium.

Both Robin and Jabulani had never taken part in any sort of organised walking or running event prior to this and although they aimed to complete the challenge within 24 hours without stopping, they actually finished after 31 hours and 5 minutes on the road, without stopping for sleep!

Many roads had small or no footpaths and the country roads in the dark were especially tricky to navigate along. Robin had hoped to complete 82 mini challenges on route, as he though they might get bored on route, however each time they stopped the muscles seized so the challenges were dropped and the focus was entirely on finishing.

Whilst in Atherstone, they had to do an emergency stop at the local Chinese takeaway because the energy levels had dropped so low and there was no other shops open!

Members of the Leicester Deaf Community extended their support with well wishes posted on Facebook and via SMS on the route. At the finishing point at 11.05pm on Sunday evening, many members even turned up at the Walkers Stadium to cheer Robin and Jabulani home.

A full report is coming soon on the 3 City Challenge, look out for that. For now, check out the picture diary.

Don’t forget, you can also still donate online at the Just Giving site. After all the sponsor money is collected, an announcement will be made with the total raised.
