Are You Fit Enough to Join the British Army?

Ever wondered if you are fit enough to join the British Army? There are certain physical standards that you must match before being able to join and the standard is measured through a series of tests.

Physical Testing
Press-ups: 44 in 2 minutes for men, 21 in 2 minutes for women
Sit-ups: 50 in 2 minutes for men and women
Multi-stage Fitness Test: Equivalent to a 1.5 mile run in under 10.5 minutes for men and under 13 minutes for women.

Press-ups
Form is extremely important here. Place your hands on the floor, shoulder width apart. Your legs must be straight and not touching the floor. When lowering your body, your chest should stop just above the floor and upon returning, your arms must be fully extended. There are hundreds of different types of press-ups, so make sure if you are planning to join the army, you practice this exact form.  You are permitted to rest and therefore are not required to perform consecutive repetitions, however the clock will continue.

Sit-ups
The sit-up has just as many variants as the press-up, if not more. Be absolutely sure to observe the exact form required. Lie flat on your back, bend your knees at a 90° angle and keep your feet flat on the floor. Cross your arms over your chest with your fingers touching the shoulders. Bring your body up until it is in a vertical position and return to the starting position, making sure your back is flat on the floor before you start the next repetition.

MSFT: Multi-Stage Fitness Test
Remember the bleep test at school? Imagine a 20 metre track, an ever-increasing in speed beeping noise giving you an ever-decreasing amount of time to shift your body across that 20 metres. The test is comparable to a 1.5 mile run so to train for the MSFT, find yourself a 1.5 mile route and run it as fast as you can.

Also…
There is an obstacle course that men and women must complete, so head down to the local park and start playing! Run up slides, swing on the monkey bars and run around dirt tracks. Just remember, it might be best to head down during off peak times.

Some boards also require a 500 metre run on a gravel track, check the Army website to see if that applies to you.
